HAYWARD, Calif. – The Pioneer women's basketball team will conclude the first half of CCAA play with a pair of road games at Cal State Stanislaus on January 25 and No. 9 Chico State on January 26. Both games will begin at 5:30 p.m. The Pioneers swept Cal State Stanislaus in a two-game series last season. East Bay was swept by Chico State in a two-game series during the 2011-12 campaign.
The Pioneers stand in 10th place in the CCAA with a 3-6 record. East Bay is 5-8 for the season. The Pioneers split a pair of games over the weekend including a 57-54 victory over Cal State San Bernardino. East Bay continues to improve as the season progresses, and ranks nationally in three defensive categories in Division II. The Pioneers rank sixth in field goal percentage. Opponents are shooting 32.7 percent from the field. The Pioneers are 17th in scoring defense, holding their opponents to 54.2 points a game. East Bay is 78th in 3-point field goal defense (28.3%).
Micah Walker, averaging 9.2 points per game, is the Pioneers leading scorer. Walker, who has a season-high 16 points against Cal State Dominguez Hills, tops the Pioneers in assists (22) and free throw percentage (79.4-7th CCAA overall).
Tori Breshers, who continues to top the CCAA with 1.2 blocks a game, is second on the Pioneers in scoring (8.9ppg) and rebounds (5.1rpg). Breshers has a team-best 20 steals.
Marlene MacMillan, averaging 8.6 points a game, is the fourth leading rebounder in the CCAA (7.8rpg). In her last four games, MacMillan has averaged 11.7 points and 11 rebounds while posting two double-doubles.
Brianna Terrance is netting 8.5 points per game. Breshers, MacMillan and Terrance are all averaging 8.6 points a game in CCAA play.
“We are getting good production from our inside players and now we just need to get our outside game going with more consistency night in and night out,” Pioneer Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb said. “If we could get consistent play from the core group; scoring, rebounding and defending we will continue to improve as a team.”
ABOUT CAL STATE STANISLAUS
The Warriors are in 12th place in the CCAA at 1-9. Cal Stanislaus has a 2-13 overall record. The Warriors return home after four straight defeats on the road. Lauren Godde, averaging 17.2 points per game, is the Warriors leading scorer. Godde tops the Warriors on the boards with 7.5 rebounds a game. Briana Cotton and Devin Brown are netting 9.8 and 9.1 points a game respectively.
“Cal State Stanislaus plays hard for the entire game and are on their home floor,” Barcomb said. “The Warriors have good inside post play and several defensive looks. We need to play both ends of the floor, value the basketball and get good shot selections.”
ABOUT CHICO STATE
Chico State leads the CCAA with a 9-1 record. The Wildcats, ranked ninth in the WBCA Division II poll, is 13-1 for the season. Chico State is a perfect 7-0 at home. The Wildcats are averaging 70 points a game. Jazmine Miller leads the Wildcats in scoring with a 12.6 point per game average. McKenzie Dalthorp is averaging 11.9 point per game. Analise Riezebos is the Wildcats leading rebounder (7.7rpg).
“Chico State is a deep team with outstanding guard play,” Barcomb said. “They play smart basketball and have multiple players who can put up big numbers. They play a very physical, up-tempo style and can score in a hurry.”
Following this week, the Pioneers return home to face Sonoma State on February 1 and San Francisco State on February 2.
