Pioneers Set to Host No. 17 Sonoma State in CCAA Opener

The Pioneer women's soccer team will open CCAA play on September 9 with a home match against Sonoma State. The match will begin at 11:30 a.m. Sonoma State swept the two-game conference series in 2011 including a 3-2 overtime victory in Hayward.  The Pioneers defeated the Seawolves 2-1 in 2010.

“Sonoma State is one of the top teams in the CCAA,” Pioneer coach Amy Gerace said. “We've had two good wins, but it will take a big effort by our team to defeat a team like Sonoma.

The Pioneers enter CCAA play with a 2-0 record having defeated UC Merced 8-1 and Notre Dame de Namur 2-1 in overtime. Kara Yamamoto has scored two goals and three assists in the Pioneers two matches. Eugenie Foote and Breahna Berry have each scored two goals. The Pioneers have received outstanding defensive play from senior defender Zuly Diaz. Goalkeeper Jamie Botteon has allowed 0.59 goals with three saves in two matches.

Sonoma State is 2-0 with wins over Dixie State and Grand Canyon. The Seawolves were ranked third in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America West Region Poll. The Seawolves will open CCAA on September 7 at Cal State Monterey Bay. Sara Studer and Cara Curtin have each scored two goals. Goalkeeper Alexis Sciacqua has allowed one goal a game with nine saves.
