Pioneers Fall to Cal State LA on the Road

LOS ANGELES – The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team battled through a scoreless opening half Friday before falling 3-0 to Cal State LA in CCAA action at University Stadium. The result moved the Pioneers to 2-8-1 overall and 1-5-1 in conference play.

Cal State LA controlled much of the attacking action early, but East Bay's defense held firm throughout the opening 45 minutes. The Golden Eagles recorded 10 first-half shots and six corner kicks, but goalkeeper Yvette Torres made three saves to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.

The Pioneers generated their best opportunity of the opening half in the 41st minute when Isabella Ramos put an attempt on goal, forcing a save from Cal State LA goalkeeper Kendyl Sumlin.

The Golden Eagles broke through in the 64th minute when Itzel Ramirez scored off an assist from Abigail Morales to give Cal State LA a 1-0 advantage.

East Bay looked to respond, with Ramos recording another attempt in the 70th minute, but the shot went over the goal. Cal State LA continued to apply pressure and doubled its advantage in the 78th minute when Briana Chagolla scored off an assist from Lizbet Saligan.

The Golden Eagles added a third goal in the 87th minute when Bailey Martinez found the back of the net following an assist from Celine Gehrig, bringing the score to 3-0.

Ramos accounted for both of East Bay's shots, placing one on goal. Cal State LA finished with 19 shots, including eight on target, while the Golden Eagles also held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Torres played all 90 minutes in goal for the Pioneers, finishing with five saves. Three of those stops came during the opening half, helping East Bay keep the match level through the first 45 minutes.

Despite a strong defensive effort in the opening half, the Pioneers were unable to generate enough opportunities offensively as Cal State LA pulled away after halftime to secure the 3-0 decision.
