HAYWARD - The Pioneer men's soccer team, 0-3-2 in CCAA action and 1-4-2 overall, will conclude their six-game CCAA road trip this week. On September 28, the Pioneers will play at San Francisco State. Game time is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The Pioneers will conclude their road trip on September 30 with a match at Cal State Monterey Bay. The game will begin at 11:30 a.m. East Bay defeated San Francisco State 2-0 last season. Cal State Monterey Bay swept the Pioneers in a two-game series in 2011.
East Bay is on the verge of getting in the win column in conference play following solid team performances against North Division Leader Sonoma State, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State and South Leader Cal State L.A.
“Our past five opponents have all been very strong,” Pioneer coach
Andy Cumbo said. “The conference games never get easier but we are playing against two teams who haven't been building momentum yet. As always we are eager to compete and eager to win.”
East Bay has done a good job creating scoring opportunities in CCAA play.
Florian Reppin is tied for ninth in the CCAA with two goals scored.
Chris Lara and
Rey Suarez have accounted for the Pioneers two other goals scored this season.
“Sometimes goals come in waves,” Cumbo said. “The most important aspect is creating goal scoring opportunities. We have done this on a regular basis and feel we are due to capitalize on our chances.”
The Pioneers continue to receive solid play from their backline led by
Salvador Mendoza,
Kellen Crow and
Paul Dewhurst. Goalkeeper
Rene Martinez is third in the CCAA with a .867 save percentage and tied for fourth in total saves with 26.
Bryce Bookhamer has turned away 11 shots in seven games.
“Our back line and GK's are strong, stingy and disciplined players,” Cumbo said. “They have been the backbone of our team and despite last weekend we do have 100% confidence in them to pick up two shutouts this weekend.”
San Francisco State is 0-3-2 in the CCAA and 1-5-2 for the season. The Gators are led in scoring by Kevin Johnson with two goals (9th-t CCAA). Goalkeeper Anthony Rodriguez is fourth in the CCAA with 26 saves and 10th in save percentage.
Cal State Monterey Bay is 0-5 in CCAA and 0-6 for the season. Max Brixley, Servando Perez and George Pluckorus have all scored one goal for the Otters this season. Goalkeeper Cory Calder has allowed 2.33 goals a game in six appearances in the net.
“Both SFSU & CSUMB have talented players and bright coaches,” Cumbo said. “Despite their results so far this year we will definitely not take them lightly. We are not in a position anything for granted and we need to work hard throughout both matches in order to earn the results we want.”
