Pioneers Finish Seventh at Skyhawk Desert Shootout

PALM DESERT, Calif. –
The Cal State East Bay men's golf team returned to action this week, claiming seventh in a field of 11 at the Skyhawk Desert Shootout, hosted by Fort Lewis College at the Classic Club Golf Course in Palm Desert. The Pioneers were led by an 11th-place finish from Jeff Cornez, who led the team for the first time this season. 

Cornez finished the tournament with a three-round total of 232 (+16) to tie with three other individuals for 11th in the field of 56 players. Cornez opened the tournament with two rounds of 77 (+5) to tie for the team's lowest round with Chris Herzog, who finished in a tie for 23rd overall. Herzog took five strokes off his first round score of 82 to finish with a 77 (+5) in each of the last two rounds for a total of 236 (+20).

A.J. Warren tied for 26th overall, finishing one stroke behind Herzog with a three-round total of 237 (+21), while A.J. Maxedon took four strokes off his first-round score to post a 78 (+6) in the third round and tie for 30th overall along with Justin Tambunting. Both Maxedon and Tambunting posted totals of 239 (+23) and single round lows of six-over 78.

The Pioneers finished eight strokes back of sixth-place Colorado Christian and five strokes ahead of Notre Dame de Namur, while also claiming a victory over CCAA opponent Cal State Dominguez Hills. Colorado Springs claimed the team title with a three-round total of 914 (+50) to finish eight strokes ahead of UC San Diego. The Mountain Lions also earned individual medalist honors, as Eddie DeLashmutt posted a 71 (-1) on Tuesday to finish one stroke ahead of teammate Spenser Biersdorff and South Mountain Community College's Jimmy Kozikowski with a 225 (+9).

Cal State East Bay will return to action in its final tune up before CCAA Championships when it heads to Turlock for the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational next week. The Pioneers will open the tournament with the first two rounds at Turlock Country Club on April 16.
