Pioneers Tied for Sixth After Two Rounds at CCAA Championships

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - 
The Cal State East Bay men's golf team opened the 2012 CCAA Championships on Monday and enter the third and final round of the tournament in a tie for sixth place after 36 holes at Hunter Ranch Golf Course in Paso Robles. The Pioneers are locked in a tie with Sonoma State with a team total of five-over 581 and sit 15 strokes back of leader Chico State. East Bay is set to tee off for the final round on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.

The Pioneers carded a first-round 290 (+2), led by A.J. Warren's three-under 69 in the opening round. After the first 18 holes, East Bay sat just five strokes back of the Wildcats in third place. Unfortunately, the Pioneers were one of just two teams which didn't improve their score in the second round, but East Bay only added one stroke in the second round with a three-over 291. 

Blake Ahlin and Chris Herzog are tied for 10th in the individual standings with an even 144. Both Ahlin and Herzog started the day with a two-over 74 before taking four strokes off in the second round with a two-under 70. The pair is tied with five other players for 10th, including two players from Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Stanislaus. 

Jeff Cornez is third on the team, tied for 23rd with a two-round total of 147 (+3). Cornez posted a two-over 74 in the opening round before carding a 73 (+1) over the second 18 holes of the day. Warren sits just one stroke back of Cornez with a total of 148 (+4) despite adding 10 strokes in the second round with a 79 (+5). Warren's opening 69 (-3) was the top score in the first round and the third best score in the tournament so far. 

A.J. Maxedon carded an opening-round 73 (+1) to tie for 13th after the first 18 and enters the final round tied for 33rd with a seven-over 151 to round out the Pioneer contingent. 

Chico State enters the final round with a two-stroke lead over Cal State Stanislaus with a team total of 566 (-10). Cal State San Bernardino sits seven strokes behind the Warriors, while UCSD is four strokes back of third with a 579 (+3). East Bay and Sonoma State are just one stroke back of fourth-place Cal State Monterey Bay and hold a 31-stroke advantage over Cal State Dominguez Hills. 

Cal State East Bay will close out the 2012 CCAA Championships on Tuesday when it tees off at 7:30 a.m. at Hunters Ranch Golf Course in Paso Robles. The Pioneers will be paired with Cal State Dominguez Hills, with Maxedon kicking things off at 7:30 on the first tee and the rest of the team following in eight-minute increments.
