Pioneers Tie for Fifth to Cap Regular Season at Hanny Stanislaus Invite

TURLOCK, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay men's golf team finished in a tie for fifth at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational on Tuesday. The Pioneers carded their lowest team total of the season with a three-round score of 22-over 886 in their final tournament before the 2012 CCAA Championships next week in Paso Robles.

For the sixth time this season, Chris Herzog paced East Bay, carding his second lowest score of the year with a three-over 219. Herzog tied with Chico State's Bobby Bucey for 17th in the field of 106 individuals and never posting score higher than 74 at the event.

Jeff Cornez followed Herzog, tying for 34th with a seven-over 223. Cornez took 14 strokes off his first-round score to card the Pioneers' lowest score of the tournament – a four-under 68 – in the second round. Cornez was just four strokes behind Herzog, while A.J. Maxedon came in four strokes off of Cornez with a 227 (+11) to claim a tie for 48th.

Greg Atkinson posted a one-over 73 in the first round and finished the tournament in a tie for 60th with a 229 (+13). Blake Ahlin rounded out the Pioneer team one stroke back of Atkinson with a three-round total of 230 (+14) to tie for 65th overall.

The Pioneers finished in a tie with Cal State Monterey Bay in the tournament that served as a preview for the CCAA Championships next week. Host Cal State Stanislaus claimed the team title, beating out Western Washington by nearly 20 strokes. The Warriors' Trevor Blair also took individual medalist honors with a 209 (-7) to beat out Chico State's Kyle Souza and Hawaii Hilo's James Hall by four strokes. The Wildcats finished third in the team competition, while Point Loma Nazarene claimed a two-stroke lead over the Otters and Pioneers to finish fourth. East Bay also finished ahead of four conference teams, including UC San Diego and Sonoma State.

Cal State East Bay will head to Paso Robles next week for the 2012 CCAA Championships. The eight conference teams are set to get underway at Hunters Ranch Golf and Country Club on Sunday, April 22.
