LIVERMORE, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay men's golf team entered the second day of the Notre Dame de Namur Invitational in seventh place but bounced back with a final round 294 (+6) to finish fourth at the tournament on Tuesday. The Pioneers finished just four strokes back of third place and 25 strokes behind winner Chico State following three rounds at Poppy Hill Golf Club in Livermore.
For the second straight week
Chris Herzog paced the Pioneers, finishing in a tie for fifth thanks to his third-round 71 (-1). Herzog posted a three-round total of three-over 220 and dropped six strokes off his second round score in the final round. His 71 was also East Bay's best single round total and Herzog finished just four strokes back of first place.
A.J. Warren finished six strokes back of Herzog, tying for 13th in the field of 46 players. Warren notched a second-round 73 (+1) and posted a final score of 226 (+9), tying with Notre Dame de Namur's Kris Bernard.
A.J. Maxedon joined Warren and Herzog in the top 20, tying for 19th with a 13-over 230. Maxedon finished the tournament with an even 72, taking eight strokes off his first round score.
Both
Jeff Cornez and Elliott Busichio finished with a three-round total of 234 (+17) to tie for 26th overall. Cornez and Busichio each finished with their best rounds of the tournament, both carding a five-over 77 on Tuesday.
The Pioneers finished one stroke ahead of fifth-place St. Martin's after entering the final round 11 strokes back of fourth place. East Bay took eight strokes off its team total from the second round to make the comeback. Chico State captured both the individual and team titles, led by Kyle Souza's even 216, which tied him with Colorado School of Mines' Jordan Arndt. Souza took home individual medalist honors after winning a one-round playoff with Arndt.
Cal State East Bay continues the spring campaign after a month-long break from action. The Pioneers will compete in the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational at Turlock Country Club beginning with two rounds on April 15.
