East Bay Earns Weekend Sweep with 62-50 Victory Over Sonoma State

2/4/2012 9:18:00 PM

Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team posted its first weekend sweep of the 2011-12 season with a 62-50 victory over Sonoma State on Saturday night at The Wolves' Den. The Pioneers (8-13, 5-10 CCAA) had three scorers in double figures for the second straight game and posted its first back-to-back wins of the season.

“A remarkable win considering our roster has been decimated by injuries and illness,” Head Coach Suzy Barcomb said. “It was complete gut check for the remaining eight players. We played with so much heart and determination.”

Lauren Lucchesi and Brianna Terrance paced East Bay with 14 points. Terrance finished 4-for-8 from the field, converted all six of her shots from the charity stripe and added seven rebounds, while Lucchesi went 5-for-12 from the floor with five boards. Nia Bravo joined Lucchesi and Terrance with 10 points, setting a new season high. Marlene MacMillan led the Pioneers on the boards with 10 rebounds and came up just one point shy of a double-double with nine thanks to a 5-for-8 performance from the free-throw line.

“Every single player had a part in this huge win,” Barcomb said. “I'm incredibly proud of their effort to pull together and accept the challenge.”

As a team, the Pioneers shot 36.7 percent from the field and again found success at the charity stripe, going 22-30, including a 6-for-7 performance at the foul line in the first half. East Bay also out-rebounded the Seawolves 39-34 and held them to just 10 percent shooting from three-point range.

Travis Newman led Sonoma State with 10 points, while Taylor Vigil and Jaclyn Bisordi added nine and eight points, respectively. Elizabeth Day led the Seawolves' rebounding efforts with nine boards on the night. Sonoma State finished shooting 32.7 percent from the field and just 63.2 percent from the charity stripe.

In a low-scoring first half, the Pioneers and Seawolves exchanged baskets early on, before Sonoma State opened a three-point lead, 6-3, with 10:44 to play. East Bay responded with a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 12-6 lead before the Seawolves answered right back with a 16-6 run of their own to gain a six-point advantage, 22-18, with 1:15 remaining. The Pioneers weren't done, however, closing down the lead with a pair of free throws from Terrance and a Lucchesi trey that gave East bay 23-22 lead at the half.

Though a pair of Bisordi foul shots gave Sonoma State a 24-23 advantage early in the second half, but the lead was short-lived as the Pioneers responded with an 8-0 run that included three points from MacMillan and two points from Terrance. Trailing by seven, 31-24, the Seawolves scored seven straight points to tie the game for the last time before East Bay regained the lead and never trailed again in the game. The Pioneers went 14-for-19 from the charity stripe down the stretch, while holding Sonoma State to less than 20 points over the final 13 minutes of the game.

Cal State East Bay returns to action next week when it returns to Pioneer Gym for Homecoming Week. The Pioneers will meet SF State on Friday, Feb. 10 before taking on Cal Poly Pomona on Feb. 11, with both games set for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
