Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Pioneer women's basketball team dropped their first CCAA game of the season to Sonoma State 63-50 on Saturday.
The defeat leaves the Pioneers with a 1-1 record in CCAA play. East Bay is 3-3 for the season. Sonoma State improves to 2-2 in the CCAA and 2-3 overall.
The Pioneers shot only 28.1 percent from the field and made 3 of 14 three-pointers. Sonoma State shot 48.7 percent from the field and converted 10 of 19 attempts from the three-point area.
“I am disappointed in our performance tonight,” Pioneer Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb said. “We were not mentally focused at the start of the game, we did not carry-out our game plan and Sonoma came out on fire.”
Lauren Lucchesi and
Marlene MacMillan each scored 12 points for the Pioneers. MacMillan led the Pioneers on the boards with seven rebounds.
Taylor Vigil led the Seawolves with 12 points and seven rebounds. Travis Newman followed with 11 points.
Trailing by 19 points at halftime, the Pioneers made things interesting in the second half. MacMillan made a layup with 16:53 remaining to cut the Seawolves' lead to 39-25.
Elizabeth Day's layup with 4:48 left, increased the Seawolves advantage to 20 points. The basket would be the last field goal of the game for the Seawolves.
The Pioneers rallied with a 4-0 run in the following minute to trail 58-42. Lucchesi took over scoring eight points, including a 3-pointer as the Pioneers got to within 58-50 with 1:17 remaining.
Sonoma State converted five free throws in the final minute to claim the win.
“We showed our intensity defensively when we rallied late, getting steals and turnovers but it was too big of hole to climb out of tonight,” Barcomb said.
The Seawolves jumped out to a 7-2 advantage in the first half on a Marie Sweet three-pointer. Sonoma State extended its lead to 25-10 with 7:38 remaining.
Kristina Fahey converted a three-pointer with 5:44 left to give the Seawolves a 28-12 advantage. The Seawolves had their biggest lead of the first half, 34-14 with 2:57 left.

Nia Bravo hit a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left to narrow the Seawolves lead to 19 points at halftime.
East Bay will host Cal State Monterey Bay on December 8. “We will learn and work towards playing better basketball the next time we step out onto the court against Cal State Monterey Bay,” Barcomb said.
