Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Pioneer women's basketball team opened CCAA play on a successful note following a 46-38 victory over San Francisco State on Friday.

East Bay is 1-0 in the CCAA and 3-2 overall. San Francisco State stands at 1-2 in CCAA play and 2-3 for the season.  The Pioneers, who have allowed their opponents only a 28.6 percent shooting percentage from the floor and 21.5% from the three-point area, held the Gators to 22.2% from the field. San Francisco State was 0 for 15 from the three-point area.

“We defended very well tonight,” Pioneer Head Coach Suzy Barcomb said. “It was a necessity because we didn't run very good offensive sets.”

Freshman Tori Breshers came off the bench to lead the Pioneers with 12 points. Breshers added six rebounds. Micah Walker followed with 10 points. The Pioneers welcomed the return of Marlene MacMillan who contributed to the Pioneer victory with eight points and eight rebounds. Rachel Finnegan had a good game with five rebounds, two assists and four steals.

“Tori gave us a great lift once again off the bench,” Barcomb said. “She is making great progress in her first year. Mac was back tonight and she was a bit rusty but she hit the glass for us tonight and scored some key baskets. I like Rachel's stat line, she plays hard and she competes on every possession.”

Farrah Shokoor and Nicole Hicks accounted for 33 of the Gators 38 points with 18 and 15 respectively. Shokoor completed a double-double with 16 rebounds.

Following three ties in the first six minutes of the first half, the Gators opened up an 11-7 lead with 13:21 remaining.

Walker's jumper with 9:05 left, highlighted a Pioneer 7-0 run. The Pioneers increased their lead to 20-14 on Finnegan's layup with 4:19 remaining.

Consecutive baskets by Brianna Terrance enabled the Pioneers to take a 24-14 lead. MacMillan converted a jumper with 20 seconds remaining to give East Bay a 10-point halftime advantage.

The Pioneers held the Gators to only 25 percent from the field in the first half. Walker and Breshers led the way for the Pioneers with seven points each.

East Bay built a 19-point advantage with 11:05 remaining in the second half on a Terrance layup. Walker's three-pointer maintained a 46-33 Pioneer lead with 4:44 left.

The Gators went on a 5-0 run to cut the Pioneers advantage to 46-38 at the 2:25 mark.

The Pioneer defense held the Gators scoreless on 0 of 5 from the field the remainder of the second half to earn the victory.

Following the victory over San Francisco State, East Bay will continue CCAA play at Sonoma State on December 1. “It's the CCAA, our opponents are going to be relentless,” Barcomb said.
