SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Following an overtime victory over UC San Diego the previous night, the Pioneer men's basketball team lost to Cal State San Bernardino, 83-71 on January 14.
With the defeat, the Pioneers are 5-4 in the CCAA and 7-6 overall. The Coyotes improve to 8-2 in the CCAA and 9-4 for the season.
The Pioneers were led in scoring by
Jason Smith, who tied his season-high output with 23 points and for the second time, converted seven 3-pointers.
Roshun Wynne scored 12 points.
Mark Samuels had 10 points and led the Pioneers on the boards with eight rebounds.
Tre Brewer led four Coyote players in double figures with 22 points. Theron Laudermill followed with 21 points while Kwame Alexander tallied 18.
Trailing 12-9, the Pioneers went on a 16-3 run the following five minutes as
Jason Smith hit his fourth three-pointer of the first half.
The Coyotes plunged ahead 32-29 with 2:28 remaining.
Jacari Whitfield converted a three-pointer to tie the game 15 seconds later.
A free throw and a three-point basket by Laudermill gave Cal State San Bernardino a 37-33 lead with 41 seconds remaining.
The Pioneers'
Vincent Capellino came off the bench to hit a three-pointer with two seconds left to narrow the Roadrunners' advantage to 37-36 at halftime.
The Coyotes and Pioneers battled in the first seven minutes of the second half with neither team leading by more than a basket.
Jurrell Turner's layup gave the Pioneers their final lead, 61-58, with 10:54 remaining.
Brewer hit a three-pointer with 8:41 left to put the Coyotes ahead, 63-61.
The Coyotes outscored the Pioneers, 20-10, the remainder of the second half to earn the victory.
Cal State East Bay will return home on January 20 to face Chico State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
