SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. –
The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team fell to Cal State San Bernardino, 57-46, on Thursday night. The Pioneers (4-21, 4-17 CCAA) out-shot and out-rebounded the Coyotes but could not overcome an early deficit in the loss.

East Bay was led by senior forward Azizi Dotson's 14 points and sophomore forward Marlene MacMillan's 12 rebounds. The Pioneers shot 37 percent from the field and out-rebounded CSUSB 39-35 but hit just two threes and went to the free-throw line just twice in the second half.

“Marlene was great on the glass,” CSUEB Head Coach Suzy Barcomb said. “Azizi had an outstanding inside presence tonight.”

Cal State San Bernardino was paced by three players in double figures, led by Sabrina Gonzalez with 17 points. Danielle Shows and Eisha Sheppard added 10 points apiece, with Shows posting a double-double with 13 rebounds. Gonzalez was an impressive 6-for-17 from the field, hitting five three pointers in the process. CSUSB shot 33.8 percent from the field and committed just six turnovers, while forcing 21 miscues for the Pioneers.

The Coyotes wasted no time opening a 16-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the first half. Trailing 24-8, East Bay went on a seven-point run to close the gap to nine with six minutes to play, but CSUSB answered back and regained a 14-point advantage, 35-21, before the half.

Cal State East Bay came out of the break with renewed energy, quickly closing the gap to seven with a 12-4 run to open the second frame. The run saw Dotson put away a pair of buckets and a free throw, while the Coyotes went 1-for-8 from the floor, helping East Bay pull within seven, 39-32, with 14:43 remaining in the half.

Despite the run, Cal State San Bernardino regained control and took a 49-35 lead with 10:51 left to play. Though the Pioneers closed the gap to just eight points twice over the next three minutes, San Bernardino maintained a comfortable lead to close out the victory.

Cal State East Bay will close out the 2010-11 campaign on Friday at Cal Poly Pomona. East Bay will look to avenge its earlier 59-41 loss to Pomona in Hayward on Jan. 20. The Pioneers and Broncos are set to cap the CCAA regular season at 5:30 p.m. at Kellogg Gym.
