Solid Team Effort Gives East Bay Dual-Meet Victory Over UC Santa Cruz

HAYWARD, Calif. -
The Pioneers used a strong team effort to defeat UC Santa Cruz 142-135 in a dual meet on Saturday.

Jenel Lopez led the Pioneers solid performance with three first place finishes. Lopez broke her own school record in the 100 Yard freestyle as she posted the 13th fastest time of 52.92 in Division II this season. She recorded times of 24.46.8 and 1:56.89 to capture the 50 Yard Freestyle and 200 Yard Freestyle.

“Today was my best performance of the season,” Lopez said. “It was great to beat my earlier time in the 100 Freestyle and to have a good showing at home in front of my family and friends. I'm proud of my teammates. We're coming around as a team.”

Freshman Alyssa Tenney was victorious in the 200 Yard Backstroke with a time of 2:12.11. Tenney earned her second first place finish of the meet in the 200 Yard IM in 2:14.20. She capped off an outstanding meet with a Division II top-25 time of 1:00.44 in the 100 Yard Backstroke, good for second place.

Sara Bonino contributed to the Pioneer victory with a win in the 1000 Yard Freestyle (11:01.89) and a second place finish in the 500 Yard Free (5:24.75).

Rachel Knowles won the 200 Yard Breastroke and took second in the 200 IM which secured the dual meet victory for the Pioneers.

Madelyn Mooers won the 100 Yard Fly with a time of 1:02.68.

Cal State East Bay finished the meet strong with a first place finish in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. Bonino, Bethany Hoopman, Jenni Perez and Jasmine Stowers recorded a winning time of 3:49.42.

“I'm proud of our team performance today,” Pioneer coach Ben Loorz said. Everybody stepped up and did the job. We had a couple of NCAA II national times and Rachel nailed a clutch second place in the 200 Yard IM to put us ahead in the meet. “I couldn't be happier with this team.”
