Pioneers Open Season with 5th-Place Finish at PCSC Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. -
The Pioneer women's swim team opened the 2011-12 season with a fifth place performance at the Pacific Coast Swimming Conference Pentathlon and Relays on October 7-8.

Cal State East Bay, which finished fifth out of seven PCSC institutions, ended the two-day invitational with 175 points.  Loyola Marymount scored 763.5 points to capture the invitational.

In the pentathlon, newcomer Jenel Lopez had a good day finishing second in the 25 yard free, 11.65 and 100 yard free, 54.36. Lopez was third in the 200 yard free, 1:58.82 and seventh in the 50 yard free, 25.28.

Sara Bonino posted a solid time of 5:22.17 to finish seventh in the 500 yard free. Bonino was eighth in the 25 and 200 yard free.

Jenel Lopez showed great consistency in her five events.” Pioneer coach Ben Loorz said. “Sara Bonino had a solid time in the 500 yard free.”                                                                                                                                      

Rachel Knowles placed fifth in the 100 yard breastroke with a time of 1:12.42.

Freshman Alyssa Tenney placed fourth in the 100 yard back in 1:03.18.

In the relays, the Pioneers placed sixth in the 400 yard Individual Medley Relay as the foursome of Tenney, Knowles, Stephanie Lau and Hoopman recorded a time of 4:26.61.

The Pioneers also took sixth place in both the 300 yard breastroke and 400 yard free relays.

“We competed in a lot of races the past two days,” Loorz said. “We swam well, but there is still work to do.”
