Pioneers Conclude First Half of CCAA Play with Setback to Cal State San Bernardino

The Pioneer men's basketball team concluded the first half of CCAA play with a 74-51 defeat to Cal State San Bernardino on January 22.

At the halfway point of CCAA play, the Pioneers are 0-12. East Bay is 2-14 for the season. Cal State San Bernardino improves to 9-2 in conference and 13-2 overall.

“There were some games in the first round of CCAA play I felt we could have won,” Pioneer head coach Will Biggs said. “If our guys keep practicing hard, the wins will come in the second half.”

A three-pointer by Roshun Wynne enabled the Pioneers to take a 14-13 lead with 7:20 left in the first half. The Coyotes went on a 19-4 run to take a 32-18 advantage at the 2:16 mark. A jumper by Corey Caston gave the Coyotes a 36-20 lead at halftime.

The Pioneers fought back in the second half to trail 50-41 on a Wynne jumper with 11:07 remaining. Kwame Alexander and Caston scored the next 16 points as the Coyotes extended their lead to 66-44 at the 4:10 mark and never looked back the remainder of the game.

Wynne led the Pioneers with 15 points. Will Freedman hit a pair of 3-pointers and ended the night with eight points. Jared Waters came off the bench to score seven points and grab six rebounds. Mark Samuels had a team-best nine rebounds and scored six points.

Caston and Alexander each scored 14 points for the Coyotes. Alexander pulled down 10 rebounds to complete a double-double. Robbie Robinson poured in 11 points while David Jefferson led Cal State San Bernardino on the boards with 11 rebounds.

Cal State East Bay will begin the second round of CCAA play with a road game at Humboldt State on January 27.
