SANTA BARBRARA, Calif. - A solid team effort enabled the Pioneer women's cross country team to finish second at the Westmont Invitational on Sept. 25. Led by sophomore
Megan McDaniel's third straight fourth-place showing, Cal State East Bay defeated four teams in the six-team field.
The Pioneers compiled a team score of 36, seven points behind first place Westmont College. East Bay finished ahead of third place Fresno Pacific by 49 points and defeated three other teams.
"The girls ran a solid race," CSUEB Head Coach Greg Ryan said. "We improved by 20 seconds over year's race."
East Bay had five runners place in the top 10, including McDaniel's fourth-place performance and
Amanda McNabb's fifth-place showing. McDaniel covered the 5K course in 20:25.0, while McNabb recorded a time of 20:30.
Bernadette Lu (21:02),
Nancy Velazquez (21:17.0) and
Tiffany Duffy (21:22.0) finished eighth, ninth, and 10th, respectively.
Clarivel Vega clocked 22:34 to finish 16th, while
Nastassia Hamor placed 21st in 23:24 to round out a strong Pioneer performance.
"Megan was our top runner while Amanda ran a strong race," Ryan said. "Bernadette had a good outing as well as Nancy and Tiffany."
