Mark Del Monaco enters his second season as an assistant cross country and track and field coach for the Pioneers in 2017-18. He serves as recruiting coordinator for all four teams. He came to Cal State East Bay after three seasons as an assistant coach at Metropolitan State in Denver, Colo.
For the roadrunners, Del Monaco coached the women's cross country team and focused on the distance runners during track season. He also assisted with recruiting, budget management, training programs, and other day-to-day operations.
Metro State experienced a great deal of success during Del Monaco's stint in Denver. He coached 12 All-Americans, 22 All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honorees, and the school record holder in the 5k. He helped lead the women's cross country squad to back-to-back trips to the NCAA Championships, highlighted by the best season in program history in 2013, during which the Roadrunners placed eighth in the nation.
Del Monaco began his coaching career after a successful collegiate career of his own. He competed in cross country as well as indoor and outdoor track and field at La Salle University. In 2010, he was named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team. Mark is also a two-time qualifier for the USATF half-marathon championships, and he won the 2010 Rehobeth Beach half-marathon. He earned his bachelor's degree in information technology with a minor in history from La Salle in 2011.
