Ben Loorz

Ben Loorz enters his sixth season at the helm for the Pioneers in 2015-16. He led CSUEB Swimming to its best season ever in 2013-14, placing second at the PCSC Championships and 15th at the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Loorz was named PCSC Coach of the Meet and his top swimmer, two-time PCSC champion Caitlin DeNise, was named Female Swimmer of the Meet. Six Pioneers qualified for the NCAA Championships and four earned All-America honors, led by the 400-yard freestyle relay team, which finished fourth in the nation.

For the second straight season the Pioneers broke 16 school records including all of the backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly marks. Four different swimmers earned All-America honors and all six who competed at the NCAA National Championships earned All-America Honorable Mention honors.

Once again Cal State East Bay earned Academic Team All-America honors after posting team grade points averages of 3.17 and 3.31 in the fall and winter seasons, respectively. Five different swimmers earned Academic Individual All-America status highlighted by Makila Schuck and Alyssa Tenney who competed at the NCAA National Championships.

Loorz joined the Pioneer coaching staff from University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he served as an assistant coach for three years and previously spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach for University of Utah from 2005-07. Loorz also has experience at the community college, club, masters and camp levels, coaching swimmers of all ages since 1996.

Loorz swam collegiately at American River College in Sacramento after graduating Summa cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music from University of Southern California in 1999. He also obtained a Master of Science in Communication from Utah in 2008.

Loorz is a member of the American Swim Coaches Association and is working on finalizing his Level 4 certification. He is currently the head coach of the Master's swimming team at Cal State East Bay which serves students, faculty, and the surrounding community.
