The 2015 season marked the seventh under current Head Coach Andy Cumbo. He has earned over career 140 victories and has produced 70 All-Conference Players at the NCAA Division II level, serving as head coach of the Humboldt State men's soccer team (2004-08) and HSU women's soccer team (2001-08) before arriving in Hayward.
In 2015, he tripled his conference win total from the previous year and also matched the program's best overall record since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 2009. Cumbo led the Pioneers to their fourth straight five-win season and placed three players on the All-CCAA teams for the first time in program history. During Cumbo’s tenure, the men’s soccer team has boasted 10 All-CCAA honorees and four NSCAA All-West Region Awards, including Kellen Crow’s 2014 NSCAA Academic All-Region award.
During the Spring Break of 2015, Cumbo took the team on a cultural and athletic adventure to England, fundraising 100 percent of the expenses for the eight-day trip. The international experience included three major competitions, a two-night stay at Upton Park with a West Ham vs. Sunderland match, and a three-night stay with the Wolverhampton Wanderers while training and competing on their grounds. The team also toured Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, and Warwick Castle.
Cumbo is also involved in other professional organizations outside of CSUEB. He is in his ninth year serving as the National Chairman for the National Soccer Coaches of America Association (NSCAA) Division II All-America Committee, his 10th year serving as the West Region Chairman, and his third year as the chairman of the NCAA Division II MLS Combine recommendation committee. In 2015 he also became an NSCAA Instructor for the Level I, II and III Goalkeeper Courses. Andy also has his USSF A license, the NSCAA Advanced National, and the NSCAA Advanced National Goalkeeper Diploma.
Coach Cumbo was an assistant coach for the San Jose Earthquakes USSDA teams during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. In 2015 for the first time ever both the U16 and U18 teams advanced to the Playoffs, and the U18’s made it to the USSDA Final Four. In 2014 the U16 team made it to the quarter finals.
During his time at Humboldt State, Cumbo led the Jacks to an in-season top-six regional ranking for three of his five seasons. He was named Conference Co-Coach of the Year in 2005, and he produced five NSCAA All-Region players and 21 All-Conference honorees during his tenture.
As the women's head coach at Humboldt State from 2001-08, Cumbo guided the team to the 2006 CCAA Tournament and the program record for most wins in a season (2003 & 2006). The Jacks earned 39 All-CCAA selections and had 15 student-athletes recognized as All-Academic under Cumbo's watch.
A four-year goalkeeper at SUNY-Plattsburgh, Cumbo received All-Conference honors, recorded 55 wins, 24 shutouts and was a two-year captain. He won a SUNYAC Conference Championship and competed in the NCAA Tournament in 1998. As a youth, he competed for the New York State West ODP Team, the Rochester Mavericks Soccer Club and won a Gold Medal for the Western New York Team in the Empire State Amateur Games. He also competed in both Holland and Spain during high school.
Cumbo received his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 2000 and he completed his Master of Science in kinesiology from Humboldt State in 2002. As an undergraduate student he participated in the International Exchange program while attending Chester University in England, and also the National Student Exchange program while attending Humboldt State University in Northern California.
He lives in Danville with his wife Susan, his son Aidan (12) and daughter Adelaide (10).
