Current Student-Athletes
This is intended to highlight some pertinent NCAA rules for you as an enrolled student-athlete at Cal State East Bay. All current and prospective student-athletes are encouraged to download and utilize the student-athlete handbook as a resource for answering questions regarding all aspects of the collegiate experience.
Annually, all new and returning student-athletes must fill out and turn in compliance paperwork which is accessed by student-athletes by logging into their Teamworks Compliance + Recruiting account. An email will be sent to student-athletes each summer once the paperwork is available.
Definition of a Student-Athlete
An enrolled student-athlete is a student who has begun his/her first day of initial full-time collegiate enrollment or who has reported for intercollegiate practice at Cal State East Bay.
Academic Eligibility
- Good Academic Standing
- You must be considered to be in Good Academic Standing by Cal State East Bay standards to be considered eligible for collegiate competition
- Full-Time Enrollment - 12 units
- A student-athlete must be a full-time student in order to participate (practice or compete). The only exception to this rule for both competition and practice eligibility is for graduating seniors who don’t need 12 units to finish their final semester (This must be verified and proper documentation on file in advance of the semester)
- Cumulative GPA: 2.0
- A student-athlete must maintain a 2.0 GPA at all times (both cumulative and institutionally)
- 9 unit rule
- You must earn a minimum of nine degree-applicable credit hours during your previous full-time term.
- 24/18 unit rule
- At the start of each academic year (fall semester), a student’s continuing eligibility is determined by whether or not the student has successfully completed at least 24 units since the start of the previous year. This includes summer school units, however at least 18 of those units need to be earned during the regular academic year.
- Major Declaration
- Students must declare a major by the start of their 5th full-time semester to remain eligible. From this point forward, all units earned towards the 9/18/24 unit requirements must be degree applicable. If you plan on switching majors please consult with our Athletics Academic Advisor first, as it may impact your eligibility.
Sports Wagering
NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes from participating in any gambling activity that involves any sport sponsored by the NCAA at any level. Any activity that involves putting something at risk for the chance to win something in return is considered sports wagering and an NCAA violation. Risk + Reward = Violation. This includes fantasy leagues and tournament brackets that meet the above guidelines.

Year-Round Drug Testing
The NCAA randomly selects institutions and student-athletes for drug testing throughout the academic year, including the summer. All student-athletes are subject to drug testing before, during or after their competitive seasons. All student-athletes need to be aware of the NCAA Banned Drugs list and should check with the Athletic Trainers for any questions. Student-athletes who test positive are subject to at least a one-year suspension and loss of eligibility.
Many nutritional/dietary supplements contain NCAA banned substances. In addition, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not strictly regulate the supplement industry; therefore the purity and safety of nutritional/dietary supplements cannot be guaranteed. Impure supplements may lead to a positive drug test. The Cal State East Bay Athletics Department does not promote the use of nutritional/dietary supplements and the use of such supplements is at the student-athlete’s own risk. For more information contact a CSUEB Certified Athletic Trainer.

Hazing
The NCAA and its member institutions are responsible for the health and safety of all student-athletes and take an active role in hazing prevention on their campuses. Hazing is illegal in the state of California and Cal State East Bay does not tolerate any form of hazing or any actions that produce public humiliation, physical or emotional discomfort for student-athletes. Any situation thought to be hazing will be fully investigated and if found to be a team activity, teams may be suspended from all competition for the remainder of the academic year.
