CLINIC INFORMATION

CLINIC TITLE
Training Age versus Chronological Age: Improving longevity, and decreasing athlete burnout in the sport of track and field through proper progression, and talent identification.

LOCATION
Cal State University East Bay Business and Technology building

TARGET AUDIENCE
Coaches, PE teachers, parents and anyone who works with athletes at the developmental stages of their careers and beyond.

BACKGROUND
Track and field participation at the high school level is at an all-time high with participation figures over 1 million combined boys and girls. It is the third most popular sport that kids participate in in this country, second only to football (men) and basketball (women), respectively. However between the ages of 10-17, over 70 percent of youth drop out of sports because of a combination of injury, lack of proper training, boredom, and stress due to emphasis on winning and long practice hours.

AGENDA/PURPOSE
We are looking to provide information to coaches that can help them be more successful in their development of young athletes in an attempt to develop consistency in training, and talent identification and decrease this high percentage of track athletes from dropping out of the sport. The purpose is to provide proven scientific and practical information on progression and training design that the coaches can take back and immediately implement into their programs. We will do this through a series of presentations covering the psychology, sprints, jumps, and distance events. The presentations will be followed by a round table discussion where participants can share ideas and converse with the clinicians on how to improve “Save” our sport. The goal is that this becomes an annual meeting that coaches use to share ideas, learn, and develop a strategy of progression consistency across the board, so that we can “improve longevity and decrease athlete burnout.”
