ARCATA, Calif. — Cal State East Bay men's soccer broke through for its first victory of the season Sunday afternoon, using four different goal scorers to defeat Cal Poly Humboldt 4-1 at College Creek Field.
The complexion of the match changed early when Cal Poly Humboldt was reduced to 10 men following a red card in the 10th minute. East Bay went on to generate 11 shots in the opening half before breaking through in the 27th minute.
Alexis Villanueva Zavala set up Bennett Richards for the opening goal, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage they carried into halftime.
East Bay created separation after the break.
Jefferson Parada connected with Julian Valle in the 63rd minute, with Valle finishing the opportunity to double the Pioneers' lead.
Six minutes later, Mauricio Velazquez set up Alejandro Zarate for East Bay's third goal of the afternoon.
The Pioneers added another in the 77th minute when Kiichi Murakami found the net off an assist from Richards, giving East Bay four goals from four different players and a 4-0 advantage.
Cal Poly Humboldt scored in the 89th minute on a goal from Izaiah Grosveld to produce the final 4-1 margin.
Richards finished with a goal and an assist, while Valle, Zarate and Murakami each scored. Parada, Velazquez and Villanueva Zavala each recorded an assist.
East Bay finished with 19 shots, putting eight on goal, and generated 11 corner kicks. Cal Poly Humboldt recorded 10 shots, five on goal and three corners.
Adan Corona played all 90 minutes in goal and made four saves.
With the victory, Cal State East Bay improves to 1-5-2 overall and 1-0-1 in CCAA play.
