No. 5 Pioneers Defeat Dominican, 5-1 on Thursday

TURLOCK, Calif. - Cal State East Bay softball continued its win streak, stretching to nine in a row after defeating Dominican, 5-1 on Thursday in the Stan State Invitational at Warrior Softball Field. Timely doubles and command from the circle by Marissa Quintero led to Thursday's win.

After a leadoff double in the top of the second by Jasmyn Morales, Cynthia Carrillo had a double of her own, driving in Morales for a 1-0 lead.

With Isabel Mercado on second base in the top of the fifth, another RBI double for East Bay, this time hit by Jeslyn Cuellar, put the Pioneers up 2-0.

The Penguins cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Kate Tobola.

Holding on to a one run lead, East Bay was determined to add some insurance. Singles by Sarissa Block and Cuellar, followed by a walk drawn by Brynn Gentry, loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh. Rylee Gomez hit another clutch double for the Pioneers, driving in a pair of runs. After a pitching change by Dominican, Morales came through with an RBI single to drive in Gentry to pad the lead to 5-1.

To seal the game, Quintero retired all three batters in the bottom of the seventh with groundouts for a 5-1 win to extend the streak to nine in a row for the Pioneers.

At the plate, Morales went 3-for-4, crossing the plate once and hitting for an RBI. Cuellar and Block added two hits each.

Quintero's complete game included five strikeouts with two hits allowed and one run allowed. It was her fifth complete game of the season. With Dominican's run in the bottom of the fifth being earned, Quintero's streak without allowing an earned run ended with an incredible 32.2 innings. She improves to 7-0 with a 0.36 earned run average.

The Pioneers return to action at Warrior Softball Field on Friday with a pair of games in the Stan State Invitational. At 9 a.m., East Bay takes on Central Washington, and at 2 p.m. has a rematch with the Penguins.
