HAYWARD, Calif. - The No. 15 Cal State East Bay softball team split a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday to Dominican University of California. The Pioneers were shut out 2-0 in game one, but responded in game two with a 4-1 win over the Penguins.
Game One: Dominican 2, Cal State East Bay 0
Kate Tabola led off the game with a solo home run to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. In the same inning with two outs and the bases loaded, Dominican capitalized with an RBI single hit by Alicia Garcia for a 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers had runners in scoring position in the bottom of the first, third and fourth innings but were unable to capitalize, as the Penguins handed East Bay its second loss of the season with a 2-0 shutout.
Game Two: Cal State East Bay 4, Dominican 1
The Pioneers finally got on the scoreboard for the first time on Wednesday in the bottom of the second inning. Ysabella Cortez launched a solo home run to left field to start what became a three-run inning for East Bay. After the home run, Gabriela Rivera doubled, then two batters later, Ashlee Toy doubled to drive in Rivera for a 2-0 lead. And the doubles continued, as Annelise Garcia repeated Toy's hitting with her own RBI double as the Pioneers led 3-0 after two innings.
THe Penguins got one run back in the top of the sixth that resulted from an error, but East Bay matched the scoring in the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run by Alexa Zumstein for a 4-1 lead.
After six innings in the circle by Marissa Quintero in which she did not allow an earned run, Jaidyn Gamble closed out the game in the top of the seventh retiring all three batters en route to a 4-1 win to split the doubleheader.
- Cortez's hit her first career home run in her four seasons at East Bay.
- Zumstein's home run was her third this season.
- Toy has six doubles on the season after her two total on the day.
- Garcia had two hits in the second game.
- Others with two total hits on the day for East Bay include Toy, Rivera and Jeslyn Cuellar.
- Marissa Quintero improved to 7-0 on the season with six strikeouts and no earned runs allowed in game two.
