IRVINE, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay softball team continued their impressive start to the 2025 season, securing two more victories on day two of the Concordia Kickoff Classic at Great Park. The Pioneers showcased their prowess both in the circle and at the plate, improving their record to a perfect 4-0. They defeated Biola, 5-1 in the morning game, and in the late afternoon game, topped Colorado Christian, 5-2.
Cal State East Bay 5, Biola 1
Cal State East Bay's offense wasted no time, striking in the first inning when
Alexa Zumstein singled to right field, driving in
Cynthia Carrillo for the early lead. The Pioneers extended their advantage in the second frame, with
Marissa Farias launching a solo home run to make it 2-0.
The game remained tight until the fifth inning when the Pioneers' bats came alive once more. Farias continued her stellar day at the plate, tripling to lead off the inning. Jenna Porto's sacrifice fly brought Farias home, and Annelise Garcia added another RBI single to push the lead to 4-1.
Farias put the exclamation point on her outstanding performance with an RBI single in the sixth, securing the 5-1 victory for the Pioneers.
Marissa Quintero delivered a masterful performance in the circle, throwing her second complete game in as many days. Quintero's dominance was evident as she struck out six batters while allowing just one hit and no earned runs.
Cal State East Bay 5, Colorado Christian 2
The game started with some adversity for East Bay, as Colorado Christian took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an unearned run set up by an error to start the inning. However, the Pioneers' resilience shone through as they battled back in the fourth.
Izzy Reyes sparked the rally with a single and a stolen base. Marissa Farias then delivered a clutch double to center field, driving in Reyes to tie the game. Jeslyn Cuellar followed with another double, bringing Farias home and giving the Pioneers a 2-1 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The game remained tight until the seventh inning when East Bay's offense exploded for three insurance runs. Mariah Ayala led off with a single to set the tone for the inning. Later in the inning, Annelise Garcia singled, and would steal second base. Cynthia Carrillo's sacrifice fly brought in Ayala, and two more runs scored later in the inning after an error and infield RBI single by Jeslyn Cuellar.
Although the Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, and had the tying run at the plate, the Pioneers finished with a 5-2 win.
Jaidyn Gamble made her Pioneer debut one to remember, pitching 6.1 strong innings and allowing only one earned run while striking out three.

The Pioneers will look to maintain their winning streak as they wrap up the 2025 Concordia Kickoff Classic on Sunday, February 2. The Pioneers face UH Hilo in their final tournament game, with the first pitch scheduled for 9 a.m. at Great Park in Irvine, California.
