ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay women's soccer used a key first half goal from
Kella Folkerts and stellar play between the pipes from
Ashley Levi to shutout Cal State LA on Friday afternoon. The Pioneers improved 5-5-2 overall and 3-1-1 in CCAA play with the victory and now sit alone in second place.
East Bay jumped out to an early lead with Folkerts getting on the board in the 14
th minute.
Taylor Hodges sent a cross into the box from the right side which hit off the head of a defender and towards Folkerts inside the box. She then headed the ball inside the right post and past the LA keeper for her fourth goal of the season.
From there, the Pioneers leaned on a stellar defensive performance and some key saves from Levi, who recorded her fourth shutout of the year with seven saves. Levi came up big in the first half, stopping a penalty kick in the 42nd minute from Cal State LA's Delia Bocanegra to preserve the lead. She continued to deny the Golden Eagles throughout the match, making several clutch saves in the closing minutes.
Cal State East Bay's defense, earned their second straight shutout and extended their scoreless minutes streak to 247. Offensively, the Pioneers tallied 11 shots in the contest with
Morgan Pearson leading the way with four.
The Pioneers are back in action on Sunday when they host Cal State Monterey Bay at Chabot College in Hayward.
