AZUSA, Calif. - At Cougar Soccer Complex, Cal State East Bay's women's soccer team took to the field but ultimately fell to Azusa Pacific University 4-2 on Saturday, wrapping up a stretch of four road matches to start the 2024 season.
The Pioneers found themselves in an early deficit as the Cougars struck twice in the closing minutes of the first half. Hailey Hilton opened the scoring for APU in the 40th minute, assisted by Sierra Nickelberry. The Cougars doubled their lead with just three seconds remaining in the half when Natalie Kemper found the net, assisted by Hannah McLain.
Refusing to back down, Cal State East Bay stormed into the second half with renewed energy. Gabby Rodil ignited the Pioneers' comeback hopes in the 54th minute, netting her first goal of the season with an assist from Abigail Kern. The Pioneers trailed 2-1.
However, APU's Faith Crouse responded quickly, extending the Cougars' lead to 3-1 at the 60-minute mark.
The back-and-forth action continued as Mika Sayfurahman, a standout for the Pioneers, scored her first goal of the season and 11th of her East Bay career less than two minutes later, bringing the score to 3-2.
Despite the Pioneers' valiant efforts, APU's Jaci Maze sealed the victory for the Cougars with a goal in the 81st minute, assisted by Gianna Ocello for a 4-2 lead which ultimately was the final score in full time.
- Throughout the match, Cal State East Bay showcased their offensive potential, outshooting Azusa Pacific 7-6 in shots on goal, despite being outshot 13-8 in total shots.
- Rodil led the charge for East Bay with a team-high three total shots.
