Pioneer Water Polo Falls in Overtime to Concordia on Saturday

Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. -  A back-and-forth battle on Saturday for Cal State East Bay water polo finished regulation in a 7-7 tie against Concordia University Irvine in the Bronco Invitational. In the extra time, double overtime, the Pioneers were held scoreless, as the Golden Eagles scored three goals over the pair of overtime sessions at Sullivan Aquatic Center.

After the Golden Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter, Lola Gill scored a goal at the 3:22 mark of the first. Through the rest of the first quarter, both teams scored two more goals each. The Pioneers' goals were from Bailey Barlow and Rachel Heredia as the score was even at 3-3 through the first quarter.
 
Although Alex Andrist scored a goal for a 4-3 lead early in the second quarter, Concordia scored the next two goals for a 5-4 halftime lead.
 
Andrist struck again for the only goal in the third quarter, as the match was tied 5-5 heading into the final quarter.
 
Jordan Jarandson scored a penalty shot goal in the fourth quarter for a 6-5 lead, but Sofia Smith answered just seconds later for Concordia. For the rest of the quarter, both teams traded a goal for a 7-7 score at the end of regulation. Audrey Dexter netted the final goal for CSUEB in the quarter.
 
In double overtime, the Pioneers were held scoreless as CUI scored three goals en route to a 10-7 win.

The Pioneers played a second match in the tournament on Saturday against Brown University, but more details are to follow regarding the outcome. 

On Sunday, Cal State East Bay plays two matches in the Bronco Invitational. At 9 a.m., the Pioneers take on Austin College, and in their final match of the weekend, take on No. 16 San Jose State at 1:30 p.m.
