Comeback Comes Up Short on Friday for Pioneer Women's Soccer

Pioneers unable to overcome three-goal deficit to No. 2 Cal Poly Pomona

HAYWARD, Calif.— Cal State East Bay women's soccer made a late push to equalize, but No. 2 Cal Poly Pomona survived the late rally by the Pioneers and winning 3-2 in a CCAA match Friday evening at Pioneer Stadium.

MATCH SUMMARY

Vanessa Cruz led the Broncos with a hat trick, scoring all three goals for the visitors. Her first came in the 37th minute, breaking a scoreless tie. Cruz extended the lead to 2-0 in the 52nd minute with a direct free kick, then completed her hat trick less than seven minutes later.

The Pioneers mounted a comeback effort in the final 30 minutes. Evelyn Gomez scored her first goal of the season in the 64th minute, capitalizing on a rebound after Mika Sayfurahman's free kick hit the crossbar. Abigail Kern added a second goal for East Bay with just nine seconds remaining, assisted by Morgan Pearson, but time ran out on the hosts' rally.
