Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's water polo opened WWPA play on Friday taking on Biola at Pioneer Pool. The Eagles outscored the Pioneers 6-2 in the second period en route to a 20-15 victory.
In the first quarter, the Eagles would score the first two goals of the quarter. The Pioneers answered with two goals of their own – one by
Bailey Barlow and one by
Elise Whitworth – to tie the game at 2-2 with 3:27 left. The two teams would trade goals over final ninety seconds of play. The Eagles scored the final goal of the quarter and took a 6-5 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the two teams traded goals over the first 3:30 of the quarter. Then, the Eagles pulled away for a 12-7 lead at halftime.
BU scored the first goal of the quarter. The Pioneers responded with two goals of their own – one by
Jordan Jarandson and one by Whitworth, to trim the Eagles' advantage to 13-9 with 4:47 left in the quarter. After trading two goals each,the Eagles led 16-11 after three quarters.
Goals by
Luna Sarmiento and
Rachel Heredia to open the fourth quarter scoring trimmed the lead for Biola to 16-13. The Pioneers would not pull any closer as the Eagles won 20-15.
- Jarandson finished with a team-high five goals.
- Whitworth finished with four goals, while Sarmiento and Bailey Barlow scored two each.
- With two assists each were Jarandson and Whitworth.
- Biola outshot Cal State East Bay 51-40 and won three of the four opening sprints.
