Cal State East Bay Competes on Friday at Concordia Kickoff Classic

IRVINE, Calif. – At Great Park, the Cal State East Bay softball team competed in two games, but came up short in each. In the first game of the day for the Pioneers, they lost on a walk-off home run to Colorado Mesa, 4-3, then in the evening, lost 5-3 to Azusa Pacific.

GAME SUMMARIES
 
Colorado Mesa 4, Cal State East Bay 3
The Pioneers fell behind 1-0 to the Mavericks in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly RBI was hit by Rylee Crouch.
 
The next four innings were scoreless, then the Pioneers got on the board in the top of the seventh. Down to their last out with a runner on base, Cynthia Carrillo singled to advance Mariah Ayala into scoring position. CSUEB tied the game at 1-1 when Keira Cahalan hit an RBI single to drive in Ayala.
 
After Kyndal Riddell reached base to load the bases on a hit-by-pitch, Kylie Coelho delivered an RBI single, driving in Carrillo to give the Pioneers their first lead of the season.
 
The lead grew to 3-1 when Sarah Duran drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, the first two batters reached base for CMU. After they advanced on a sacrifice bunt, Crouch hit a walk-off 3-run home run to give the Mavericks a 4-3 win.  
 
Azusa Pacific 5, Colorado Mesa 3
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Riddell hit an RBI groundout to drive in Ayala.
 
APU answered with a pair of runs driven in on a double by Mia Alvarez in the top of the third inning for a 2-1 lead.
 
Two more runs were added for the Cougars in the top of the sixth on separate wild pitches.
 
Ysabella Cortez led off the bottom of the sixth with a single. After advancing to second on a single from Carrillo, then third on a passed ball, Cortez scored on a wild pitch. APU led 4-2.
 
The Cougars added one run in the top of the seventh for a 5-2 lead.
 
Duran hit a one out single in the bottom of the seventh, then advanced on a passed ball and sacrifice bunt. She scored on a passed ball as CSUEB trailed 5-3.
 
However, the final out was recorded by the Cougars for a 5-3 win.

NOTABLE STATS
 
  • Duran's RBI in the first game was her second in as many games.
  • Anamaria Beard pitched 6.1 innings in game one and had four strikeouts.
  • Carrillo finished with three hits on the day.
  • Duran has a hit in all three games for the Pioneers this season.

The 2023 Concordia Kickoff Classic continues Saturday at Great Park. The Pioneers take on Central Washington starting at 11 a.m. At 4:30 p.m., the Pioneers take on UH Hilo.
