HAYWARD, Calif. – the Cal State East Bay women's water polo team outscored NCAA Division I opponent Santa Clara by four in the third quarter en route to a 14-8 victory at Pioneer Pool on Friday afternoon.
In the first quarter, the Pioneers shut out the Broncos, 3-0.
Luna Sarmiento scored the first goal of the match with 5:11 left in the quarter,
Auriel Bill netted her first with 4:09 left and Bill would close out the quarter with a strike with less than a minute later.
The Pioneers and Broncos were even at 4-4 in the second quarter. Cal State East Bay's tallies came on a pair of goals from
Payton Bosque and one apiece from Bill and Sarmiento. The Pioneers led 7-4 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Pioneers' offense exploded for six goals. Sarmiento had three goals in the quarter and Bill, Bosque and
Maddie Wittkowske each one apiece. The Pioneers led 13-6 after three quarters.
Although SCU outscored the Pioneers 2-1 in the fourth quarter, it was not enough got a comeback. The Pioneers scored their goal in the fourth quarter on a
Bailey Barlow strike with 2:55 left.
Cal State East Bay outshot Santa Clara 37-1 and the Pioneers won all four sprints. Sarmiento finished with five goals in the match.
"We came out aggresive today both offensively and defensively," said CSUEB head coach
Lisa Cooper. "To shut Santa Clara out in the first quarter was a testament to our hustle on defense. We really took control with a 6-2 third quarter and pushed our counter attack."
The next match for the Pioneers will be tomorrow as they take on Indiana University at Pioneer Pool. The first sprint is set for 10:30 a.m.
