HAYWARD, Calif. - On Wednesday afternoon, the Cal State East Bay women's water polo team defeated Fresno Pacific, 18-9 in a WWPA matchup.
Highlighting the scoring for the Pioneers was four goals from
Bailey Barlow.
Auriel Bill, with her three goals on Wednesday, has scored a hat trick in seven straight matches. In net,
Daniela Passoni picked up the win with 24 minutes with nine saves and picked up a goal as well.
The Pioneers would get the first two goals of the game – one by Bill and one by Payton Bosque – for a 2-0 lead with 7:05 left in the first quarter. The Sunbirds got a goal back with 6:08 left in the quarter. From there, the Pioneers added five more goals – two from Barlow, one from Bill, one from Jordan Jarandson and one from Adrien Van Dyke – to finish the first quarter with a 7-1 lead
In the second quarter, the Pioneers expanded their lead, outscoring FPU, 4-2. The Pioneers would score the first two goals – one from Luna Sarmiento and one from Maddie Wittkowske – to lead 9-1 with 2:30 left in the half. The Sunbirds would score a goal 13 seconds later but the Pioneers added a goal by Rachel Heredia to take a 10-2 lead with 1:53 left in the half. Both teams would add a goal with the Pioneers' goal coming on a Daniela Passoni strike with no time remaining. The Pioneers led 11-3 at halftime.
The lead continued to grow for Cal State East Bay in the third quarter. Both teams traded goals in the opening minutes with the Pioneers' tally coming on a Mosqueda strike with at the 6:32 mark. Van Dyke would give the Pioneers a nine-goal advantage with 2:44 left in the quarter. With the two teams trading goals before the end of the quarter,the Pioneers led 14-5.
Although FPU scored four goals in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers matched with four of their own, including two from Barlow, one from Bill and one from Caroline Vollmer.
Cal State East Bay outshot Fresno Pacific 36-32 while both teams won two sprints.
Along with her three goals, Bill had two assists for a team-high five points.
"I was very proud of my team today," said Cal State East Bay head coach
Lisa Cooper. "We had a very balanced offense and everyone contributed."
The Pioneers host their third straight home match this coming Friday when they take on Santa Clara at Pioneer Pool. First sprint is set for 1 p.m.
