Pioneers Win Third Straight Match by defeating CSUMB, 18-8

SEASIDE (4-1) – The Cal State East Bay women's water polo team outscored CSU Monterey Bay by four in the fourth quarter en route to a 18-8 victory in WWPA play. The win on Friday afternoon was the third in a row for the Pioneers. 


In the first quarter, the Pioneers scored the first four goals from Auriel Bill, Payton Bosque, Leti Mosqueda and Adrien Van Dyke. The Otters scored a pair goals to trim the Pioneers' lead to 4-2. The Pioneers would add a goal from Van Dyke with 1:47 left. The Pioneers lead 5-3 at the end of the first quarter. 

 

The lead grew for the Pioneers in the second quarter as a result of two goals from Bayley Barlow and one each from Bill and Van Dyke. The Pioneers led 9-5 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Pioneers would hold the Otters at arms' length. Mosqueda scored two goals in the quarter and the Pioneers led 12-6 after three quarters.

The offense for the Pioneers was on full display in the fourth quarter. Bosque and Luna Sarmiento scored two goals apiece and Bill and Maddie Wittkowske added a goal apiece, as Cal State East Bay cruised to an 18-8 victory. 

Mosqueda, Bill and Van Dyke each finished with a hat trick on Friday. In addition to her three goals, Van Dyke added five assists. 

Daniela Passoni was in the net for 24 minutes of action to pick up the victory.  

CSU East Bay outshot CSU Monterey Bay 33-22 and the Pioneers had nine more steals (17-9) than  the Otters. 

After the match, CSU East Bay head coach Lisa Cooper spoke about the team's performance. "I was very proud of the energy and positivity my team displayed today," said Cooper. "From the first whistle we were hustling and playing East Bay water polo and kept it up for four quarters."

The next match for the Pioneers will be tomorrow as they take on NCAA Division I member UC Irvine in Hayward, which will be the first in a five-match homestand for Cal State East Bay. The first sprint is set for 5 pm.
