CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The No. RV Cal State East Bay water polo team wrapped up play at this weekend's Harvard Invitational with narrow losses to nationally ranked opponents on Sunday.
The Pioneers dropped a close early morning matchup against No. 22-ranked Long Island University, 11-10, before eventually falling against No. 20 Harvard to end the day, 10-7.
CSUEB (6-9) returns to action next weekend beginning on Friday, March 11 at the Loyola Marymount Invitational in Los Angeles.
Game 1: LIU 11, CSUEB 10
Adrien Van Dyke recorded three goals with an assist, while
Leti Mosqueda finished with two goals and two assists.
Auriel Bill also scored two goals with an assist, and goalkeeper
Daniela Passoni finished with 15 saves in the cage.
A Long Island goal with 6:12 left in the fourth quarter put LIU ahead 11-10 and was the difference in the game. CSUEB trailed by one at halftime, 8-7, and Mosqueda's goal with 10 second left in the third period tied it at 10-10.
Game 2: Harvard 10, CSUEB 7
Van Dyke scored four goals, while
Luna Sarmiento recorded two goals with two assists and two steals in a hard-fought defeat to host No. 20-ranked Harvard.
Bill added one goal with two assists and three steals, and Passoni finished with nine saves, two steals and an assist.
The Pioneers trailed by just one entering the fourth quarter, and quickly knotted the score at 7-7 on Van Dyke's goal with 5:54 left to play.
However, Harvard went on a 3-0 run the rest of the way and held off East Bay's comeback attempt in the final moments.
