SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay softball team won Sunday's opening doubleheader contest in eight innings against Cal State Monterey Bay, 2-1, before falling short in the second matchup of the day by a score of 3-2.
CSUEB (14-8, 8-4 CCAA) has won seven of its last nine games overall, and resumes action next week on the road against Cal State San Marcos beginning Friday, March 11, at 12 p.m.
Game 1: CSUEB 2, CSUMB 1 (8)
Freshman catcher
Annelise Garcia continued her heroics this season, drawing a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth inning to score
Sydney Littles and lift the Pioneers to the win. Garcia finished 1-for-3, while
Ysabella Cortez also went 1-for-3 and scored an unearned run in the top of the third off Littles' sacrifice bunt.
It was a big day for the East Bay pitching staff, as
Abby Greer allowed just one run in 5.1 innings pitched, while
Savannah Barchus (2-0) earned a victory in relief for the second-consecutive day after tossing 2.2 scoreless innings with a strikeout.
Game 2: CSUMB 3, CSUEB 2
Sarah Fukushima hit her team-leading fourth home run of the season and finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, but it wasn't quite enough in a low-scoring pitchers' dual to end this weekend's four-game series.
Madeline Ramirez hit an RBI double to left center in the top of the first to score Fukushima and put the Pioneers ahead early, before Fukushima's homer to left on a 2-0 count in the third inning extended the lead to 2-0.
However, Monterey Bay responded with three runs in the bottom half of the third and held on to escape with the series split.
Starting pticher
Anamaria Beard (7-3) threw all six innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits.
