Pioneers Top Biola in Overtime, 23-19

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay women's water polo team scored six goals in overtimeto defeat Biola University, 23-19 at Pioneer Pool on Saturday. 

In the first half, the two teams traded goals, and the lead, for the majority of the first quarter. The Pioneers would take their largest lead of the quarter at two, at 4-2, after a pair from Auriel Bill. Both teams added a goal before the end of the period as the Pioneers led 5-3 at the end of the first quarter.  

In the second quarter, the Pioneers expanded their lead. The Pioneers would gain their largest lead of the half at four on four occasions; the fourth occasion at 11-7 with four seconds left in the half on an Adrien Van Dyke goal. The Pioneers led 11-7 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Pioneers would hold the Eagles at arms' length. The Pioneers built their largest lead of the match at five, at 15-10, on a Maddie Wittkowske kill with 2:40 left in the period. The Pioneers led 16-12 through three quarters.

The Eagles scored four unanswered goals to start the fourth period with the last goal coming off the hand of Rachel Spadt to tie the match at 16-16 with 4:11 left. The Pioneers regained the lead at 17-16 with 2:17 left on a Bailey Barlow goal. However, BU Biola tied the match at 17-17 on a Veralie Naranjo strike with two seconds left in regulation to send the match into overtime. 

In the overtime frame, the Pioneers wasted no time in taking the lead for good. Wittkowske would score seventeen seconds into the period to give the Pioneers an 18-17 lead. CSUEB added five more goals in the overtime frame with two coming off the hand of Bill and Van Dyke and one off the hand of Leti Mosqueda.
 
CSU East Bay outshot Biola 42-38 while both teams won three sprints. 

The Pioneers will hit the road for their next two conference matches. The next match for Cal State East Bay will be next Saturday as they take on Fresno Pacific University in Fresno. The first sprint is set for 2 pm.
