HAYWARD, Calif. – On Wednesday evening, the first home game of the 2022-23 season took place for the Cal State East Bay men's basketball team. The Pioneers lost the home opener, 85-67 to Academy of Art.
The first half included as much as a four-point lead by ART U and with just over a minute left in the first half, a Pioneer lead of six points on a 3-pointer from
Payden White. At the halftime break, Cal State East Bay led 41-36.
The Pioneers shot 51.84 percent from the floor and went 10-for-12 from the free throw line. The Urban Knights went 13-for-30 from the floor in the first 20 minutes and made all six free throw attempts in the half.
Less than five minutes into the second half, ART U tied the game at 48-48, then regained the lead at the 14:43 mark on a jumper by Deang Deang. The lead for Academy of Art continued grow, as the Pioneers were held to only 19 points in the final 15 minutes-plus of action as the Urban Knights won 85-67 on Wednesday.
- Dimitrios Klonaras led the Pioneers in scoring with 15 points, going 4-for-11 in field goals and 5-for-5 in free throws.
- Chris James was the leading rebounder for Cal State East Bay with six, and he scored eight points.
- Defensively, Klonaras had three steals.
- As a team, CSUEB finished 24-for-62 from the floor and 14-for-18 in free throws while the Urban Knights went 26-for-53 from the floor and 24-for-29 from the free throw line.
- The Pioneers were outrebounded by ART U, 36-31.
- Klay Brown was the leading scorer for ART U with 20 points and Will Balata had a team high eight rebounds.
