SEASIDE, Calif. —
The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team suffered a close defeat on Saturday afternoon, dropping its season-opener on the road to Cal State Monterey Bay, 1-0.

With the match scoreless late in the second half, Monterey Bay's Alexandra Diaz sent in a cross from the right corner that sailed just out of reach of Pioneer goalkeeper Jordan Smith and landed in the net for the game's only goal of the afternoon.

CSUEB (0-1) recorded four shots total, with three on target, as seniors Riley Spitzer, Ana Herrera and freshman Lexie Randolph each had scoring opportunities for the Pioneers.

Smith tallied three saves in the net, while senior defender Kayla Morales and redshirt junior midfielder Andrea Aborqui played all 90 minutes for East Bay.

CSUEB returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 7, as the Pioneers play host to Holy Names at 7 p.m. in a match that was postponed on Sept. 2.
