Alfred "Al" R. Mathews Scholarship in Baseball

-- For baseball athletes with minimum 3.0 GPA and financial need
Richard and Susan Sherratt created the Alfred "Al" R. Mathews Scholarship in Baseball to honor Rich's former baseball coach, Dr. Al Mathews, whose work had a deep and enduring impact in his life as well as for Pioneer Athletics.

In spring of 1964, Dr. Mathews started the university's baseball program, serving as head baseball coach for nine years. His 1971 and 1972 baseball teams won the Far Western Conference championship. For 20 years (1972-1992), Dr. Mathews served as Director of Athletics. Under his leadership, the university's intercollegiate athletic program earned a national reputation, earning six NCAA national titles, and 64 conference championships.

The university was represented in the Olympics by a number of its athletes and hundreds of student-athletes earned All-American distinction. Dr. Mathews was inducted into Cal State East Bay's Pioneer Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.

In addition to his coaching duties, Dr. Mathews served as an assistant, associate, and then full professor of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
