OAKLAND — The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team showed flashes of excellence on Saturday afternoon, but wasn't able to sustain its momentum in a defeat to No. 12-ranked Cal State San Bernardino, 92-80, in a contest played at Tobin Gym on the campus of Holy Names University.
Senior forward
Zafir Williams scored a team-high 21 points with three rebounds, while freshman guard
DJ Sanders added 15 points, four assists and three rebounds.
Senior
Justin Vigil finished with 10 points, including three 3-pointers, along with five rebounds. Junior guard
Zack Perlstein had nine points with six rebounds, and junior
Kaito Williams recorded nine points, three assists and three steals.
East Bay trailed by one at halftime, and took a 49-48 lead on a
Kaito Williams' jumper with 16:10 remaining. The Pioneers pulled within four late in the second half on
Zafir Williams' bucket inside to make it 76-72 with 3:50 left to play
CSUEB shot 48.1 percent from the field and 47.6 percent (10-for-21) from 3-point range. The Pioneers scored 30 points off 17 San Bernardino turnovers.
Cal State East Bay returns to action on New Year's Day, as it takes on Cal State Dominguez Hills on Jan. 1, 2022, beginning at 3 p.m.
