TEMPE, Ariz. —The No. RV Cal State East Bay water polo team took on two ranked opponents Friday in the first day of the Cross Conference Challenge, hosted by Arizona State.
The Pioneers fell short in a thrilling overtime contest against No. 25-ranked Azusa Pacific, 8-7, after dropping the opening game of the day to No. 3 Hawai'i, 18-1.

Sophomore goalkeeper
Daniela Passoni tallied a career-high 18 saves, but it wasn't quite enough in Cal State East Bay's overtime loss on Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and rallied with three scores in the fourth knot the score, 7-7.

Tahnee Trew scored a game-tying goal with 27 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, but Azusa Pacific's Gabrielle Martinez scored a game winner with 57 seconds left in the first overtime period for the Cougars' victory.

Auriel Bill scored three goals, while junior
Adrien Van Dyke added one goal, two assists and two steals. Juniors
Maddie Wittkowske and
Ivanna Anderson also scored one goal apiece for Cal State East Bay (1-2).

Bill scored a goal for CSUEB with 3:17 remaining in the Pioneers' loss to open play at this weekend's invitational against Hawai'i, which is ranked third nationally and qualified for the National Collegiate Water Polo Championship last season.

Maci Taylor and Bill each recorded a steal, while Passoni finished with five saves.
The Pioneers resume play at this weekend's invitational on Saturday, as they take on No. 15 Princeton at 8 a.m. PT, and No. 10 Arizona State at 12:30 p.m. PT
