SAN FRANCISCO -- The Cal State East Bay softball team fell short in its bid to close out the season with a victory as San Francisco State took both ends of Saturday's doubleheader to finish off a series sweep.
The red-hot Gators will enter next week's CCAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed, while the Pioneers wrap up their slate with a record of 12-36.Â
The script for game one of the twinbill followed a similar pattern to Friday's opener in that
Abby Greer came out on the losing end of a well-pitched dual. The Pioneers and Gators tallied the same number of hits in the game, but CSUEB wasn't able to string a few together to muster a scoring rally against Karla Soto, who improved to 17-4 with the win.
Meanwhile, SF State did manage to push across two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth against Greer, who allowed just seven hits in a complete game effort, but didn't receive the run support to avoid a 4-0 loss.
The Pioneers finally got their first run of the day to grab an early lead in game two. After a walk to
Bailee Aguigui and a single by
Desiree Jimmy, senior
Belle Placencia picked up an RBI in her final game with an opposite-field hit.Â
Unfortunately, the Gators exploded for five runs in the bottom of the frame and grabbed control of the game. They tacked on a run in the third and another in the fourth after that to make it 7-1.Â
The Pioneers avoided the eight-run rule and managed to put together some offense in the final two innings of the season. In the sixth,
Meghan Araneta put a bow on her outstanding senior season with a leadoff single to left. She came around to score on a single by
Jackie Najera, followed by yet another RBI base hit by Placencia.Â
Then in the seventh, senior
Courtney Leyba drew a walk in her final collegiate plate appearance,
Sarah Fukushima was hit by a pitch for the 19th time (which leads the CCAA), and
Maddie Ramirez singled to left field to load the bases. Araneta then brought Leyba home with a ground ball double play.
Placencia was the only Pioneer with multiple hits in the game, finishing 2-for-3. Aguigui also reached base twice.Â
Taylor Lara started and took the loss her final outing with the Pioneers. Greer came back out to finish it off and allowed one run over the final three innings.Â
Fukushima went 1-for-3 and finished the season with a .374 batting average, which ranks in the top-10 in the conference. It's the highest average by a CSUEB player since
Ali Cerminara hit .390 in 2015, and its stands as the program's third-highest mark of the CCAA era.
