CSUEB Softball Splits Doubleheader Finale at Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay softball team split their road series doubleheader finale against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday afternoon, April 13 at Toro Diamond.
 
East Bay now stands 11-29 on the season with a 7-21 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play after falling 3-1 in their league series to CSUDH.
 
In the opening game of the doubleheader the Pioneers broke out the bats late in the ball game to garner a 7-1 victory over the Toros. In the circle, Freshman hurler Abby Burkholder (W, 3-2) (Sacramento, Calif.) earned a complete game victory. She now has four complete games on the season as she finished the outing with a strikeout and only one earned run given up.
 
In total the Pios notched 10 hits in the contest. Sophomore Maddie Ramirez (Chino Hills, Calif.) paced the Pioneers with three hits and three RBIs including a solo home run to center field in the top of the sixth inning. Ramirez is now tied with Sarah Fukushima (Sacramento, Calif.) with five homers on the season to lead CSUEB. Fukushima finished with a hit and a run scored.
 
Jennifer Palmares registered a single in the fourth inning and a single in the seventh innings in the ball game. Palmares also picked up an RBI, scored a run and stole a base. Jackie Najera (Santa Ana, Calif.) knocked a two-run single up the middle in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and give the Pioneers a lead in the ballgame for good.
 
Bailee Aguigui (Vacaville, Calif.) scored East Bay's first run of the game in the opening inning and scored another run in the seventh inning, Aguigui also tallied a single in the third innings, drew two walks and logged a stolen base.
 
Emilie Portesi (Chino, Calif.) doubled to left center in the bottom of the seventh inning and later scored a run in that same inning. Hailey Davis (Albany, Ore.) singled in the sixth inning and also stole a base. Rachel Tadlock (Woodland, Calif.) scored a run in the fourth inning Meghan Araneta (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) recorded an RBI in the seventh inning.
 
In the series finale, the Pioneers could not hold on to a late two-run lead as the home team Toros riddled off a 10 run sixth inning to claim a 10-2 victory.
 
Sarah Fukushima and Rachel Tadlock each turned in multi-hit performances as Fukushima notched two hits, including a lead-off double in the top of the sixth inning and Tadlock collected a single in the fifth and an RBI single in the sixth inning.
 
Jackie Najera picked up a hit in the in the fifth inning and also stole a base. Jennifer Palmares singled up the middle to lead off the the top of the fifth inning and scored on an Emilie Portesi sacrifice fly for the first run of the ballgame. Portesi compiled one RBI in the outing.
 
Courtney Leyba (Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored a run after entering the game as a pinch runner in the sixth inning and Jocelyn Baldon (Chino Hills, Calif.) tallied a stolen bases after entering as a pinch runner in the sixth inning of action.
Abby Greer (L, 6-13) (Beaverton, Ore.) tossed the first 5.3 innings of the game and notched one punch out while allowing six earned runs on nine hits. Taylor Lara (La Puente, Calif.) also saw action in the circle and allowed one earned run. Abby Burkholder closed the game for East Bay and only gave up one hit.
 
The Pioneers will take on No. 13 Chico State at San Jose State's brand new Spartan Softball Field. That series will open with a doubleheader Friday, Apr. 19 at 1 p.m. and conclude Saturday, Apr. 20 when the Pioneers celebrate Senior Day at 11 a.m. Spartan Softball Field is located near CEFCU Stadium on SJSU's south campus, next to the tennis courts on the corner of S. 10th St. and E. Humboldt St.
