HAYWARD, Calif.
-- The Cal State East Bay water polo team competes in Pioneer Pool for the final time this Friday afternoon when the Pioneers take on No. 23 ranked Cal State Northridge at 2 p.m.

Friday's match will be preceded by the annual "Senior Day" ceremony to honor the six members of the the 2019 senior class -- Cheyenne Brady, Maeve Flynn, Brooke Hodgkinson, Makenna Nation, Cheyenne Pena, and Brittany Smith -- who will be playing their final game.

The following day, the Pioneers travel up to Rohnert Park for a crucial conference showdown as they battle Sonoma State at 1 p.m. in a designated Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) contest.

CSUEB is coming off a difficult week in which they dropped games to a pair of tough teams. They fell just short of sweeping the season series with Santa Clara, losing on the road Thursday by a score of 9-6. Then two days later, they hosted No. 17 UC San Diego and were unable to pull off their first-ever victory over the Tritons.

The Pioneers are now 0-2 in their designated WWPA games, falling to UCSD and Fresno Pacific. Their record in those matches will determine their seeding at the upcoming WWPA Tournament, which adds particular importance to both Saturday's game at Sonoma State and the regular season finale next week at Cal State Monterey Bay.

Auriel Bill was East Bay's leading scorer last week with three total goals and a pair of assists. She continues to lead all WWPA players in assists for the season and ranks fourth in the conference with 82 total points. Sophomore teammate Adrien Van Dyke is just ahead of her at 83 points on the strength of her team-high 53 goals.

Friday will be the second matchup of the season between the Pioneers and CSUN. The Matadors claimed a narrow 11-9 victory in the first heads-to-head contests, which took place at the Indiana Hoosier Classic. Van Dyke had a hat trick in that game and Smith tallied a pair of goals.

The Pioneers will also be playing their second match of the season against Sonoma State on Saturday. The teams met in Hayward just two weeks ago, with CSUEB hanging on for an 8-7 victory on the back of Van Dyke's four-goal effort. The Pioneers have won three straight matchups over the Seawolves over the last two seasons.
