TURLOCK, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay softball team fell to Western Washington by a score of 3-1 on Sunday morning in its final game of the 2019 Tournament of Champions.
The Pioneers finished the tournament with a 2-3 record, while the Vikings notched a perfect 5-0 mark to improve to 22-9 for the season. Combined with their split of Thursday's makeup doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino, CSUEB went 3-4 for the week.
The Pioneers briefly led against WWU after scoring the game's first run in the bottom of the second. Starting pitcher
Taylor Lara posted zeroes in the first two frames, then
Jennifer Palmares started a two-out rally with a single to left-center.
Desiree Jimmy followed with a single to right, then
Jackie Najera lined one over the shortstop's head to pick up an RBI with CSUEB's third straight hit.
The Vikings answered back with a run in the third and another in the fourth against Lara. She allowed another run in the fifth before being relieved by
Abby Greer. Lara managed to escape some trouble during her outing to keep the Pioneers in the game, but the offense wasn't able to mount any rallies against WWU's Maklinee Sellevold, who pitched a complete game.Â
Greer finished the game with three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five. East Bay stranded two in the fifth, couldn't bring
Meghan Araneta home following a one-out double in the sixth, and brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but the Pioneers ultimately didn't muster any magic.Â
Palmares was the only Pioneer with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-3.
Courtney Leyba also reached base twice with a single and a walk.
Next up, the Pioneers return to CCAA play to battle No. 11 ranked UC San Diego on Friday and Saturday in a four-game series that will take place at San Francisco State.Â
