East Bay Earns Series Victory with Sunday Split at Humboldt State

ARCATA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay softball team notched its first series victory of the season in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play after splitting Sunday's doubleheader on the road at Humboldt State to close out its series against the Jacks.

HSU won the first game of the day, 10-6, but the Pioneers rallied to capture the finale by a final of 5-2 as Abby Greer picked up her second victory of the weekend. CSUEB took three out of four from Humboldt following their doubleheader sweep on Saturday, which marks the first time the team has won a series in Arcata since 2012.

The Jacks took control early in the morning contest, scoring twice in the second and six times in the third. East Bay did mount a rally in the fifth inning to cut their deficit to three. After loading the bases with two outs, the Pioneers got a three-run double from Meghan Araneta, followed by an RBI single from Jennifer Palmares.

However, Humboldt quickly answered back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to quell East Bay's comeback hopes. Freshman Madi Greco went 3-for-4 in the loss, capping it off with a run-scoring double in the left-center gap in the sixth to plate CSUEB's final run of game one.

In game two, Greer made sure the Pioneers didn't fall behind early again. The right-hander  was excellent for the second day in a row, holding the Jacks scoreless through the first three innings.

The first of four Humboldt errors allowed CSUEB to score the game's first run in the third. Sarah Fukushima, who leads the conference with 14 hit-by-pitches, was hit by a pitch with one out. After a single by Maddie Ramirez, a miscue on Greco's ground ball brought Fukushima home.

Humboldt answered back by mounting their only scoring rally of the day against Greer in the fourth, plating two runs to take over the lead. They had two additional runners in scoring position with one out, but the CSUEB junior was able to escape further trouble.

Then in the fifth, East Bay put together its game-winning rally. After they loaded the bases with no outs, Ramirez tied the score with a sacrifice fly. Courtney Leyba also advanced to third on the play, which was important because it allowed her to score the go-ahead run the very next batter on Greco's sac fly. Araneta followed with a double in the gap to bring home Fukushima, and then a wild pitch and an error allowed Araneta to score the fourth run of the inning.

Greer was able to nail down the complete game victory, retiring the last seven Humboldt hitters to end the series. She walked just one and struck out six en route to her fourth win of the year.

Leyba was the only Pioneer with multiple hits in game two, while Greco knocked in a pair of runs. Ramirez went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI to close out an impressive roads trip.

After their most successful weekend of the season, the Pioneers now have a break from CCAA play in order to compete in Stanislaus State's annual Tournament of Champions next weekend, which will pit East Bay against five non-conference opponents next weekend in Turlock.
