ST. GEORGE, Utah -- The Cal State East Bay softball team wrapped up its road trip to the desert on a high note Saturday morning, defeating Central Washington by a final score of 8-4 in the last game of the Dixie State Classic.
The East Bay offense tallied 10 hits in the victory and batted .379 over five games, as the Pioneers posted a 2-3 record against very strong competition.
Abby Greer tossed a complete game for her first victory of the year, and the Pioneers belted four home runs to power past the Wildcats. As a team, East Bay hit seven homers during the weekend after totaling just nine all of last season.
CWU went ahead 1-0 in the second inning on a passed ball, but the Pioneers answered back in the third, as freshman
Madi Greco ripped a three-run blast to center. The Wildcats strung together three hits and stole a pair of bags in the fourth, platting two runs to tie the game 3-3.Â
But the Pioneers snatched the lead back quickly. Their next time up,
Jackie Najera and
Sarah Fukushima went back-to-back, both homering to center field. CWU scored again on a solo home run in the sixth, but the Pioneer offense had yet another answer.
In the top of the seventh, Naejra and Fukushima both singled, then Greco hit her second home run of the day to left-center. The rookie capped off a remarkable debut weekend, going 5-for-9 in Utah with three homers and eight runs batted in.
Those was all the insurance runs Greer would need. The junior allowed three earned runs and struck out four, scattering 10 hits.
Fukushima went 4-for-4 and scored three runs to finish off a ridiculous weekend in which she reached base 15 times, racked up 21 total bases, drove in eight runs, and scored five more.
The Pioneers are on the road again next week to open conference play, visiting Cal State San Bernardino for a pair of doubleheaders.Â
