TURLOCK, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay softball team had a tough afternoon at the plate on Thursday, scoring just one total run as Stanislaus State swept a doubleheader against the Pioneers at Warrior Field.
The Warriors jumped ahead early to notch a 7-1 win in the series opener, then prevailed over the Pioneers in a pitchers' dual on the back end of the twinbill, walking off with a 1-0 victory.
CSUEB remains winless in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play in the young season despite an outstanding effort in the circle Thursday from junior
Abby Greer. The right-hander took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but suffered the hard-luck loss when Stanislaus strung three hits together in the seventh.
Fellow junior
Bailee Glover got the first in the first game and ran into some trouble early. A two-out opposite field double just snuck inside the foul line to give Stanislaus a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Glover set the Warriors down in order in the second, but then in the third inning, two hits and an error brought another Warrior run home. A ground out made it 3-0, and then a solo home run capped off the inning for Stanislaus.
The Pioneers answered back in the top of the fourth with their only scoring rally of the day, and it happened in a flash.
Jennifer Palmares shot a double into the right-center gap to lead things off, then
Emilie Portesi followed by roping one into the left-center gap to trade places with her.
Unfortunately, Stanislaus came right back in the bottom of the frame and loaded the bases with two outs against reliever
Taylor Lara, then broke the game opener with a bases-clearing hit to make it 7-1, putting a damper on any hopes of a Pioneer comeback.
The second contest didn't feature much offense of any kind, as Greer and Stanislaus starter Megan Stacy were both in control from the outset. If anything, Greer was more dominant, allowing just two base runners through the first six innings.
The Pioneers tallied three hits and drew a pair of walks against Stacy, but had several line drives find the gloves of Warrior defenders. On four occasions, East Bay got a runner into scoring position, but weren't able to come up with the big hit they needed.
In the bottom of the seventh, the home team hit back-to-back singles to start things off. Then after a pop out, Lia Tom's drive to center went over the out-stretched arm of
Bailee Aguigui, allowing the winning run to score.
Freshman
Madi Greco was the only Pioneer to get a hit in both games of the doubleheader, going 1-for-3 in the opener and 1-for-2 with a walk in the nightcap.
CSUEB will look to get in the win column when they return to Warrior Field Friday at noon for two more games to wrap up the series.
